Crook is a relatively small community, however the nearest cinemas are currently in Consett and Durham, with major cinema complexes at the Metro Centre, Boldon and Teeside Park. A cinema in Crook would happily serve the nearby communities, stretching up towards Weardale.
We are aware that a multiplex cinema is planned for both Consett and Bishop Auckland, and it is for that reason that this building cannot rely completely on the cinema to make the project work. We would therefore like to create a centre for the arts, where the cinema will double up as a small theatre venue, incorporating a Comedy Club, music, and theatrical entertainment. We have local theatre groups such as Glenholme Theatre Group and Jack Drum Arts who we are sure will benefit from the project.
The plan is also to create a venue to help with those with dementia , using images as memory triggers.
As this is a historical venue, we would like to emphasise the building's historical position in the town's heritage, and of course the natural heritage. Bringing back some of its earlier uses with a children's club and even a bingo hall, and perhaps themed nights reflecting the history of cinema.
